Peter’s Auction Pick of the Day: Designs at the end of the 20th century

As a reaction to the Modernist demands of earlier decades, various design movements of the late 20th and early 21st centuries attempted to unify their craft with the formal qualities of sculpture in order to expose the passivity with which most viewers encountered their medium as well as to redefine their own role as authors of their work.

Artist Spotlight: Wendell Castle

Cited as the father of the American Studio Furniture Movement, Wendell Castle (1932–2018) produced a prolific body of work over the course of his six decade-long career. Castle was one of the first, and most successful, artists to seamlessly blend the aesthetic sensibilities of sculpture with the accessibility of furniture. Through his signature organic forms, the artist “invented his own visual language,” that challenged the predominant modernist insistence that form follow function.

Midway through putting together our February 25, 2018 Modern Art & Design Auction, we were saddened to learn of the passing of pioneering American furniture artist Wendell Castle (1932 – 2018). No sooner had we celebrated the news that a stunning, recent piece by Castle would appear in our upcoming auction, we found ourselves mourning the loss of this envelope-pushing designer and craftsman, who was often dubbed the founding father of the Art Furniture Movement.

Just In: A Bold Chair by Wendell Castle

November 29, 2017

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

In the February 2018 Modern Art & Design Auction, LAMA is pleased to offer Castle’s ‘Abilene’ chair (2008), a recent work that illustrates the designer’s reverance to function and form working in unison. With its lyrical, undulating lines and over-the-top, biomorphic form, the Abilene chair is an exceptional example of Castle’s signature style. His use of stainless steel for a fluid design shows his mastery of the craft, and demonstrates his lasting impact upon both the fields of design and sculpture.
