Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) is delighted to announce the auction of a group of three designs by celebrated woodworker Sam Maloof (1916 – 2009) on October 9, 2016. Self-taught, Maloof first began working with wood as a child and excelled in his craft from an early age. The pieces for auction include a desk, armchair and one of Maloof’s iconic rocking chairs, all created between 1991 – 1992. Carved from comfortable, hard-wearing walnut, the chairs are embody the elegant simplicity of Maloof’s designs, which place function first. Maloof’s attention to detail was legendary and rather than employing hundreds of technicians, he had a hand in every object that left his workshop. Each of these remarkable pieces bear the hallmarks of Maloof’s classic aesthetic.

This year was once again a period of new records and strong prices for Los Angeles Modern Auctions: in 2014, LAMA’s yearly sale total increased by 58.8% from 2013. The year got off to an exuberant start with the sale of an exemplary crocheted wire sculpture from important American sculptor Ruth Asawa—which soared nearly 5 times over its estimate to $1.43 million, effectively tying the world auction record for any work by the artist. Los Angeles artists Mike Kelley and Ed Ruscha both set world auction records for works on paper and prints, respectively. In design highlights, Maria Pergay’s iconic stainless steel Flying Carpet daybed set a new world auction record for that model. Other top lots include works by Vija Celmins, John McLaughlin, Alberto Giacometti, Sam Maloof, and George Nakashima. We are excited to continue the journey as we are now accepting material for 2015!
