Though California has birthed an incalculable list of monumental artists, some might argue that it has been the Golden State “transplants” who, in choosing to place their fingers on the pulse of the region’s s character, have most keenly materialized its identity. The Latvian-born painter and playwright Raimonds Staprans (b. 1926) is a sterling example of this phenomenon, and we are pleased to offer two of his works, A Study of the Shiny Paint Can (1994) and Clearwater #2 (1994), in our upcoming Spring 2020 Modern Art & Design Auction.

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) is pleased to announce the auction of three iconic prints by celebrated painter Richard Diebenkorn (1922–1993) on October 9, 2016. His influential depictions of landscape became associated with the Bay Area Figurative School. Three aquatint etchings from the Clubs and Spades series are on offer; drawing on the spade as a recurrent motif, these works derive from the artist’s childhood fascination with heraldic symbols. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a series of works by this iconic West Coast artist.

While his work shares many similarities with his Bay Area contemporaries Richard Diebenkorn, Paul Wonner, and Richard Park, Raimonds Staprans focused on still lifes and distorted landscapes with color and light at the forefront. According to poet and curator, John Yau, Staprans’ work achieves a distinct “emotional tenor” unlike Diebenkorn’s: “His landscapes are like tectonic plates. One senses that their alignment is precarious, and that everything could shift suddenly and violently in the blink of an eye.” Read more about three paintings by Raimonds Staprans to go up for auction on May 19th.
