Born in Chicago near the turn of the previous century, Edmund Teske first got his hands on a camera as a young boy. Initially studying music, one of Teske’s teachers granted him access to a darkroom and the budding artist developed his earliest prints.

Los Angeles Modern Auctions is pleased to celebrate the development and history of photography in its October 12, 2014 Modern Art & Design Auction with a range of photographic work from the 1920s to the 2000s, including pieces from Ansel Adams, André Kertész, Edward Weston, Diane Arbus, Robert Mapplethorpe, Sandy Skoglund, and James Casebere. The upcoming May 18, 2014 Modern Art & Design Auction features a selection of more than 15 works by famed photojournalists such as André Kertész and Henri Cartier-Bresson to contemporary photographers including Bianca Brunner, Alvin Booth, and Jörg Herold. Additional highlights include two works by Brett Weston (Lot 352) (Lot 353), large-scale digital pigment prints by Chuck Close (Lot 363) and Robert Longo (Lot 364), and four works by Ai Weiwei (Lot 366) (Lot 367) (Lot 368) (Lot 369).

The much-talked about first edition of Paris Photo LA has not only brought in visitors from around the world to Los Angeles, but the opening last night also created a new energy around town. Photography in general has become increasingly more important in the art market with prices soaring for modern and contemporary works.
The upcoming May 19, 2013 Modern Art & Design Auction features 25 lots of photography, an indicator of the growing photography market. The offerings include works by Sean Scully, Cindy Sherman, Julius Shulman, Jock Sturges, Antoine Verglas, William Wegman, and Man Ray (among others). Highlights include a 1963 photograph by Ruth Bernahrd (Lot 70) and Rescue at Sea, PBY Bristol Gunner by Horace Bristol (Lot 64).
