The Bay Area Figurative Movement, as it would come to be known, turned Abstract Expressionism on its head by reintroducing the figure as a central subject in abstraction. Artists such as Nathan Oliveira, Roland Petersen, Manuel Neri, and Hassel Wendell Smith—whose works are included in our 25th anniversary auction—all started their careers by dabbling in Abstract Expressionism, but gradually adopted a new approach to that idiom, transforming it with over-saturated, thickly-layered pigments, geometric compositions, and an emphasis on solitary, amorphous figures.
LAMA is delighted to announce the inclusion of an outstanding painting by celebrated artist Nathan Oliveira in our Fall 2017 Modern Art & Design Auction – the 25th anniversary auction. Crossing the line between figuration and abstraction, Oliveira’s loosely-painted works often depict lone figures or animals in landscapes. With its central abstract figure and mysterious, cloudy backdrop, ‘Untitled, Standing Figure #1’ (1990) is a classic example of Oliveira’s oeuvre.
