Milo Baughman: Practical Elegance

September 16, 2016

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) is delighted to announce the auction of two iconic tables by leading designer Milo Baughman on October 9, 2016. The elegant and functional coffee table (1952) is the epitome of the ‘California Modern’ style and is characteristic of Baughman’s early period of production. A simple, stylish desk, designed by Baughman in 1954 for Murray Furniture of Winchendon Massachusetts, is also on sale and is considered to be in unusually good condition. Celebrated by The New York Times for his innovative designs, which they described as “strong and greatly sophisticated,” Baughman’s timeless pieces have since become design classics, which remain popular to this day.

Just In: An Extremely Rare Isamu Noguchi Chess Table

March 30, 2016

Isamu Noguchi Chess Table

LAMA’s May 22, 2016 auction of Modern Art & Design will feature an Isamu Noguchi Chess Table, one of the acclaimed sculptor’s finest pieces as a designer and a seminal work in the development of organic modernism. Among aficionados and collectors, the Noguchi Chess Table is among the most admired and coveted objects in the field of mid-twentieth century American design. The biomorphic elements that compose it—the curvilinear top, legs, and tray—are just as striking and surprising now as when they were created. The Chess Table was, perhaps, Noguchi’s most elegant demonstration of his belief that everyday design objects should enrich our lives as much as art.

Peter’s Auction Pick of the Day: Hand-Selected by Otto

October 10, 2013

Gertrud & Otto Natzler pulled off a rare feat for craftspeople. Over a period of three decades, the duo created an estimated 25,000 works in ceramic, each piece carefully made by hand. The extraordinary thing is that in addition to monumental exhibition examples that took months and years to complete, they also were able to produce small, affordable works to be sold in department stores. In this Sunday’s auction, we’re offering both museum pieces and commercial collaborations, including works from the Leopold and Patricia Hirschfeldt Collection and the Estate of Ruth and Dalzell Hatfield. I can say with confidence that these Natzler ceramics are the best we’ve ever had the privilege to offer.
