French designer Maria Pergay’s (b. 1930) now-iconic “Flying Carpet” daybed (designed 1968) was the centerpiece of her debut furniture collection in the late 1960s, and LAMA is pleased to offer this design in the October 12, 2014 Modern Art & Design Auction. LAMA recently interviewed Pergay to learn more about her methods and materials. The artist’s innovative, elegant work in stainless steel is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and her collectors include Pierre Cardin, Salvador Dalí, and Saudi royalty. Pergay’s storied career, spanning five decades, continues to thrive—last year, she collaborated with the Italian luxury brand Fendi on a selection of limited edition furniture pieces.
