Richard Neutra Designs the Linn Residence

September 3, 2015

On October 11, 2015, Los Angeles Modern Auctions will offer a striking architectural drawing of the Linn Residence (Los Angeles, 1961) by the groundbreaking modernist Richard Neutra. The house in the Hollywood Hills is a classic example of the architect’s “post and beam boxcars” style of architecture–mating dual long, rectilinear volumes, which Neutra developed during the 1950s and 1960s. The drawing, with its rolling clouds and swath of blue sky, captures the majestic sweep of the place. Vibrant and affecting renderings, like this drawing with watercolor, are a fast-growing segment of the collecting market for modern design. Peter Loughrey, LAMA Director of Modern Design & Fine Art, notes that beyond their value and allure as artifacts, architectural drawings are an excellent choice for collectors because “though you might never own or live in a Neutra house, this could be the next best thing.”
