California Hard Edge

October 5, 2017

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

Hard Edge painting wasn’t always the term used to describe California’s first fully native Modernist art movement. A genre unto itself, critics and artists alike struggled to find an appropriate moniker to characterize the wholly new form of geometric abstraction that emerged on the West Coast during the late 1950s.

Just In: Karl Benjamin Painting

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) is delighted to present a remarkable painting by the celebrated artist Karl Benjamin, which will be available in our Fall 2017 Modern Art & Design Auction. Created in 1957, ‘Seascape’ is a classic example of Benjamin’s style. The composition is defined on three sides by a jagged blue border, which inscribes a series of pink, blue, and olive green triangles. These latter shapes are suggestive of landforms and the white and pale blue background can be read as an expanse of sky above this seascape.

Peter’s Auction Pick of the Day: Pure Color

Today I want to draw attention to a group of works currently being offered in the March 5, 2017 auction that embody the notion of pure color. This includes paintings by artists like Alma Thomas, Lorser Feitelson, Helen Lundeberg, Karl Benjamin, and Sam Francis, all of which employ eye-catching, vibrant hues to create a range of completely different compositions.

Classic Frederick Hammersley Painting

332-1

“Abstract Classicist painting is hard-edged painting. Forms are finite, flat, rimmed by a hard clean edge.” Curator Jules Langsner both defined a movement by exhibiting four artists–Frederick Hammersley, Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson, John McLaughlin–together under the banner “Four Abstract Classicists” in 1959, and is credited for coining the term Hard Edge painting. Noteworthy for putting West Coast abstraction on the map, the exhibition Four Abstract Classicists was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, opened at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and traveled internationally. In this exhibition, painter Frederick Hammersley (1919–2009) first gained critical recognition. Los Angeles Modern Auctions is pleased to offer a stunning example by Hammersley from 1959, which comes with significant exhibition history in the upcoming October 11, 2015 Modern Art & Design auction.

The February 23, 2014 Modern Art & Design Auction is fast approaching. This Sunday, the auction features Untitled (1964), a large-scale oil and enamel on canvas from Los Angeles’ own Father of Hard Edge, Lorser Feitelson. This painting is an embodiment of Feitelson’s Hard Edge style: large and dramatic, featuring strong colors and bold curves.

Karl Benjamin and Frederick Hammersley

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

The upcoming February 23, 2014 Modern Art & Design Auction features paintings by each member of the 1959 “Four Abstract Classicists” exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum at Exposition Park (now LACMA). Two of the youngest Abstract Classicists at the time of the first show, Karl Benjamin and Frederick Hammersley arrived at the threshold of a new art movement through contrasting pathways, but their resulting works have come to define the California Hard Edge Movement.
