LAMA is excited to be the first commercial auction house to partner with Artsy for the upcoming March 1, 2015 Modern Art & Design Auction. Together LAMA and Artsy are presenting 24 lots, which will be biddable via Artsy’s online technology. Peter Loughrey, founder and director of LAMA, has picked eight key lots to highlight having the City of Angels in common. These works in LA Connections demonstrate the importance of the art scene, and how so many were made in, around, about, or for Los Angeles. Read more on lots by Frank Stella, Alexander Calder, Charles and Ray Eames, Lucian Freud, Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, and Peter Alexander.

A bird’s eye view of the showroom reveals an impressive variety of colors, materials, and genres in the 533 lots on offer at this Sunday’s Modern Art & Design Auction. One shade, namely, that variously seductive, alarming, conspicuous hue of red, stands out amidst the crowd, and that is the topic of Peter’s Picks for today. For the October 12, 2014 Modern Art & Design Auction, LAMA will be presenting work with the bold inclusion of the color red from esteemed, canonical artists such as Jeff Koons, John Altoon, Richard Pettibone, Roy Lichtenstein, Alexander Calder, Sam Gilliam, Matt Mullican, and Eero Saarinen.

Northern-California born artist Jason Rhoades died of an accidental drug overdose at the age of 41, a year short of his critically acclaimed show at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007. A mere seven years before his death, the artist had exhibited at the 48th Venice Biennale with co-collaborator and friend, Paul McCarthy. Like Jeff Koons and Bruce Nauman that came before him, Jason Rhoades was not afraid to use industrial, commercial, and pre-fabricated materials such as neon, fiberglass, projectors, and other common objects to produce audaciously imposing and grand-scale installations. Read more about three works by Rhoades — two neon works and a book — that will go up for auction on May 19, 2013.
