Each auction at Los Angeles Modern Auctions has its knockout pieces, but Pop artworks in particular have a tendency to regularly stand out with their electrifying color palettes and playful imagery sourced from popular culture. Pop art has a way of remaining fresh and of-the-moment regardless of the era that inspired it — a fact that is continually demonstrated in the wake of each auction we host at LAMA.
Art has long been a powerful vehicle for social activism. Its unique capacity to tackle complex issues surrounding subjects such as politics and civil rights in novel ways makes it a potent channel for communicating perspectives that might otherwise not find a salient platform. In works such as his 1969 lithograph, ‘Flag (Moratorium),’ which will be offered in LAMA’s early 2018 auction, Johns takes the flag as his subject and turns it entirely on its head.
We tend to think of artistic creativity as a solo act. In the popular imagination, a painter or sculptor works alone in a studio, driven by singular personal genius. Several lots in LAMA’s February 21st sale of modern art, however, demonstrate how frequently art is the result of collaboration. Many of these are examples of technical cooperation. Others arise from friendly participation in a project. But a few works represent a true synthesis of creative minds. Of these, one name recurs: Frank O’Hara. LAMA’s upcoming auction features several collaborative artworks, including four pieces made in collaboration with O’Hara.
