Artist Spotlight: Frederick Hammersley

In the autumn of 1967 Frederick Hammersley gave a series of lectures in Claremont, California in which he laid out and elaborated on what he considered to be the seven essential elements of the painter’s language: shape, line, value, color, form, pattern, and texture. Over the course of these talks, Hammersley continually returned to the importance of shape above the other elements. “Of all the tools – shape – I feel is needed before you can do anything else,” he asserted. “Value, color, pattern and the rest cannot exist unless there is an edge where they begin and end. This edge of the shape, this boundary can be of many different kinds, either clearly defined, or soft and vague. The character of the edge can either emphasize or reduce, but it never destroys the shape.”

California Hard Edge

Hard Edge painting wasn’t always the term used to describe California’s first fully native Modernist art movement. A genre unto itself, critics and artists alike struggled to find an appropriate moniker to characterize the wholly new form of geometric abstraction that emerged on the West Coast during the late 1950s.

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) is delighted to present a remarkable work by celebrated artist Frederick Hammersley, which will be available in our October 22, 2017 Modern Art & Design Auction. EllwoodGroup

From his projects for the influential Case Study House program of the 1950s to his office’s acclaimed design for the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, the work of Craig Ellwood helped define a new architectural aesthetic. Yet, many of his admirers are unaware that he enjoyed a vibrant second career as an artist. Los Angeles Modern Auctions spoke with Ellwood’s widow, Leslie Phillips, about his art.

John McLaughlin: Uncompromised Form

February 8, 2016

Lot 176, John McLaughlin, Untitled (1958)

Regarded as one of the great American painters of the 20th century, John McLaughlin is yet one of the most underappreciated. His work in the 1950s helped define the Hard-Edge school of geometric abstract painting, and his serene, almost austere canvases were in particular seen as a West Coast counterpoint to the assertiveness of New York Abstract Expressionism. His work would have a profound impact on Robert Irwin, Larry Bell, James Turrell, and other members of the Los Angeles Light and Space movement. LAMA is pleased to offer three works by McLaughlin on February 21, 2016.

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

The upcoming February 23, 2014 Modern Art & Design Auction features paintings by each member of the 1959 “Four Abstract Classicists” exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum at Exposition Park (now LACMA). Two of the youngest Abstract Classicists at the time of the first show, Karl Benjamin and Frederick Hammersley arrived at the threshold of a new art movement through contrasting pathways, but their resulting works have come to define the California Hard Edge Movement.
