Peter’s Post-Auction Picks

October 13, 2016

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

Sometimes an exceptional piece slips through the cracks at auction. Usually this is because the auction is of such quality that even very special pieces can end up getting overlooked. I have picked out six examples from Sunday’s Modern Art & Design Auction, on October 9, which deserve closer consideration. These exceptional pieces could have sold at any other LAMA auction and if they show up once more, they will likely get more attention. These pieces are now available at a set price from LAMA and can be purchased outright, no bidding required. Here are my top fine art and design post-auction picks which are still available for sale:

Peter’s Auction Pick of the Day: Isamu Noguchi Chess Table

May 18, 2016

Lot 184, Isamu Noguchi, Chess Table, 1944-1947

LAMA is immensely pleased to offer Isamu Noguchi’s exceptional and rare Chess Table—first designed for “The Imagery of Chess,” a 1944 exhibit at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York organized by Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst. Peter Loughrey discusses this seminal exhibit and Noguchi’s contribution to it: “The table is not only a seminal work in the development of organic modernism…it also embodies a perfect union of art and design, being, as it is, sculptural and functional at once.”

Post-Auction Picks from the October 13, 2013 Auction

October 17, 2013

Today, Peter and Dan combine forces to spotlight several amazing lots from last Sunday’s Modern Art & Design Auction that are still available for purchase — all at amazing prices. These iconic works of art and design, from a beautiful Knoll lounge suite, to a masterpiece by Larry Rivers and a Sam Francis work on paper, span an incredibly diverse price range, and are sure to satisfy a variety of buyers.

Just In: George Nelson Marshmallow Sofa

February 15, 2013

Recently one of our consignors sent us a photograph from 1966 of him and his sister sitting on a George Nelson Marshmallow sofa (designed in 1956). We rarely have a chance to see such personal photographs of our auction pieces in their prime. More than forty years later, LAMA is offering this Marshmallow sofa, which is still in excellent condition (thanks to our consignor).

Timeless Timepieces: George Nelson’s “Radically Modern Clocks”

June 19, 2011

“What is a clock, anyway?” In the late 1940s, George Nelson and fellow designer Irving Harper were sitting around a table with their team at the Howard Miller Clock Company. After someone posed this simple question, they began sketching and came up with a fundamental design of six lines bisecting at a common midpoint. This […]
