Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) is delighted to offer ‘Night Shadows,’ an outstanding early etching created in 1921 by Edward Hopper, for the Fall 2017 Modern Art & Design Auction. In ‘Night Shadows’ a solitary pedestrian scurries along a shadowy, empty city street under close watch from skyscrapers hovering above. We peer down with the skyscrapers and streetlamps, casting our gaze over the lone figure without knowledge of where they are heading or with what purpose, although, like film noir, the etching’s dark tonalities induce a somber mood that suggests a quiet desperation and vague ominousness at hand.
John Register created a stark and haunting body of work that depicts places without people. In their tension between light and shadow and their embrace of vivid color, his scenes evoke an existential bleakness which has prompted comparisons to the work of Edward Hopper. To this Register responded: “With Hopper you witness someone else’s isolation; in my pictures, I think you, the viewer, become the isolated one.”
