February 17, 2016

Lot 189, Richard Prince, Bedtime Story (1988)

Learn what Richard Prince’s Bedtime Story has in common with the work of artists as various as Andy Warhol, John McLaughlin, and Donald Judd in today’s Peter’s Auction Pick. “To my mind, one of the hallmarks of a great work of art is that it resonates with associations and allusions. By that measure, Bedtime Story—the cover lot in our February 21st Auction of modern art and design—is a tour de force.”

Kaz Oshiro: Monumentalizing the Mundane

February 2, 2016

Kaz Oshiro

By “monumentalizing the mundane,” as one critic put it, Kaz Oshiro has drawn comparisons to Andy Warhol and other Pop artists with his uncannily realistic sculptural representations of everyday objects. Oshiro finishes his pieces with scuffs, scratches, and scrapes—“abstract marks,” he calls them—that suggest the object has lived through years of use. He employs the materials of painting including canvas, acrylics, wooden boards, and framing, to create sculptural objects such as the three archetypal works in this sale: Trash Bin #9 (Pink/White), Bumper #3, and Microwave Oven #4.
