In a week of record-breaking auctions in the modern and contemporary art world, Los Angeles’ premier auction house, Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) held the final sale of the spring season. LAMA’s May 18, 2014 Modern Art & Design auction achieved strong prices for blue-chip and California modern artists, commensurate with the New York and London sales. Sunday’s auction offered original works and multiples by Warhol, Picasso, Ruscha, and Wesselmann that exceeded pre-sale estimates, while a Hans Wegner desk and organizer set a new auction record for the model, with total auction sales realizing $2 million, selling 110% by value.

In the upcoming May 18, 2014 Modern Art & Design Auction, Los Angeles Modern Auctions will offer over 30 custom William “Billy” Haines designs commissioned in 1960 by Rita Roedling, daughter of Mervyn & Kitty LeRoy, for her 1015 North Beverly Drive house in Beverly Hills. The property is being sold by Rita’s daughter, Anita May Rosenstein, who also is the granddaughter of Tom & Anita May. After 25 years of selling work by Billy Haines, this collection represents the most complete and original collection that LAMA has ever represented.
