Just In: John Baldessari

March 28, 2018

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

Over the course of his long career, John Baldessari has expressed a deep infatuation with the relationship between the semantics of the written word and those inherent to visual language. His work often addresses the ways in which various visual and verbal codes both enable and destabilize modes of communication and meaning-making. “Words and imagery are both magical conveyors of meaning,” he once explained. In the upcoming June 10, 2018 auction, we are delighted to have the opportunity to include the complete set of five lithographs, which Baldessari created in response to Laurence Sterne’s classical, eighteenth-century masterwork, “The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman.”

Just In: Edward Dugmore Abstractions

March 16, 2018

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

Edward Dugmore moved to New York in 1952 and quickly became associated with a group of avant-garde artists, including Willem de Kooning, Barnett Newman, Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. It was during this period that Dugmore began heavily experimenting with the ways in which texture could be given to flat surfaces using readily-available pigments, including watercolor, ink, acrylic, and oil paint. The result was a body of large-scale works possessing a distinct tactility for which a Dugmore work is now so readily known. In the June 10, 2018 Modern Art & Design Auction, Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) is pleased to have the opportunity to include Dugmore’s ‘#50’ and ‘Blue-Black’ (1958), two important oil on canvas works created by the artist during this pivotal moment in his career on the East Coast.

Just In: Vija Celmins painting

March 9, 2018

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAAM)

During the mid-1960s, Latvian-American visual artist Vija Celmins began to move away from the Abstract Expressionist style that marked her early excursions into painting, and for a brief period focused on still life paintings and drawings, utilizing objects found close to hand in her studio space in order to sharpen her powers of perception. Works such as her 1963 ‘Untitled (Fish),’ which Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) is thrilled to have the opportunity to include in our upcoming auction, are notably absent of direct human presence, though traces of human intervention and its consequences are never too far from the surface.
