Time to Sell: Art Market Recap with Peter Loughrey

November 19, 2014

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

The second week of November is an insatiable spectacle that the art world waits for all year. As major auction houses go head-to-head and notable collectors battle for top-tier works, we ask ourselves, “There’s no way prices can go higher, can they?”—well, last week, they did just that. Christie’s and Sotheby’s both saw record-breaking prices and high sell through rates. In an analysis of these impressive results, Peter Loughrey, Director of Modern Art & Design at LAMA, shares his valuable advice on what to sell now, his perspective on the current state of the market, and thoughts on French modern art, Ed Ruscha and the “Cool School” California Artists, and Andy Warhol.

Top Lots of 2014: A Year of Record Auction Prices

November 4, 2014

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

This year was once again a period of new records and strong prices for Los Angeles Modern Auctions: in 2014, LAMA’s yearly sale total increased by 58.8% from 2013. The year got off to an exuberant start with the sale of an exemplary crocheted wire sculpture from important American sculptor Ruth Asawa—which soared nearly 5 times over its estimate to $1.43 million, effectively tying the world auction record for any work by the artist. Los Angeles artists Mike Kelley and Ed Ruscha both set world auction records for works on paper and prints, respectively. In design highlights, Maria Pergay’s iconic stainless steel Flying Carpet daybed set a new world auction record for that model. Other top lots include works by Vija Celmins, John McLaughlin, Alberto Giacometti, Sam Maloof, and George Nakashima. We are excited to continue the journey as we are now accepting material for 2015!
