Oskar Fischinger: Champion of Pure Abstraction

April 29, 2016

Lot 167, Oskar Fischinger, Wave Five (1948)

A pioneer of modernism in Los Angeles, Oskar Fischinger (1900–1967) is celebrated for his transcendent and metaphysical oil paintings, as well as for his groundbreaking work in abstract film animation. Working as an animator for, by turns, Paramount, MGM, and Disney, Fischinger turned to painting as a creative outlet—one he pursued with vigor for the rest of his life. These paintings uniquely embody a sense of cinematic movement with forms that resonate and pulse, move in waves, swell, and burst. For Fischinger, these abstractions were means to transcendent ends. He sought, through painting, to escape the earthly, and to hint at the eternal.

Just In: A Shimmering Abstract by Mary Corse

March 10, 2016

Mary Corse, Untitled (Black/Blue Bands) (2000)

Los Angeles Modern Auctions is delighted to announce an exciting addition to our upcoming Spring 2016 auction of Modern Art & Design. Untitled (Black/Blue Bands) is an abstract painting from the year 2000 by the California-based artist Mary Corse, constructed with Corse’s signature material: glass microspheres suspended in acrylic paint. Producing a startling perceptual effect, these minute beads cause the bands of white and color in her paintings to seemingly shimmer and shift above pulsing, morphing surfaces. As The New Yorker magazine put it, Corse’s “works suggest tapestries woven from stars.”

February 19, 2016

Lot 395, Steve Roden, the silent world (retract & disappear) (2001-2002)

Respected by critics as much as his peers, the Pasadena-based artist Steve Roden has been a longtime fixture in the electronic music scene and is admired for interpreting non-visual mediums—from music to literature—in abstract, visual forms conceived as paintings and installations. A featured lot in LAMA’s February 21st auction is his painting the silent world (retract and disappear), a signal work made between 2001 and 2002 from a series first shown at the Susan Vielmetter Gallery in Los Angeles. We spoke to Roden about it.
