Alfonso Ossorio: Textured Abstraction

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

The Filipino American artist Alfonso Ossorio played a crucial role in fostering the development of postwar painting in America. Ossorio was a collector and early supporter of Jackson Pollock and other Abstract Expressionists like Willem de Kooning, Barnett Newman, and Clyfford Still. He and Pollock were close with the renowned French ‘Art Brut’ artist Jean Dubuffet, a friendship which proved to be influential on the work of all three men.

Peter’s Post-Auction Picks

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

Sometimes an exceptional piece slips through the cracks at auction. Usually this is because the auction is of such quality that even very special pieces can end up getting overlooked. I have picked out six examples from Sunday’s Modern Art & Design Auction, on October 9, which deserve closer consideration. These exceptional pieces could have sold at any other LAMA auction and if they show up once more, they will likely get more attention. These pieces are now available at a set price from LAMA and can be purchased outright, no bidding required. Here are my top fine art and design post-auction picks which are still available for sale:

The LAMA Advantage: Sell with Confidence

We like to think of LAMA’s February auctions as bellwethers for the auction season ahead. LAMA’s February auction was the most successful in company history, realizing $5.3 million and setting five world auction records. On the heels of this success, Peter Loughrey, Director of Modern Design & Fine Art, shares his perspective on the current state of the market and offers his advice on what to sell now at LAMA.

Rare Mary Corse Ceramic Work

MaryCorse, Copper-Four Crosses, 1979

Los Angeles Modern Auctions is pleased to offer Mary Corse’s phenomenal Copper–Four Crosses (1979) in our February 21, 2016 auction. Since the 1970s Mary Corse has been investigating the phenomenon of light. Among the Light and Space artists, she developed her own methods of capturing fluctuating light, changing perspectives, and dynamic surfaces in paintings. This lot is an early example of her glazed tile paintings–large-scale wall works of fired and glazed clay. Such works are shiny and reflective, almost metallic, in glorious copper hues, with uneven surfaces evocative of lunar landscapes. Since these works were a departure from Corse’s usual monochrome paintings with microspheres, they are hard to find.

Interview: Don Suggs

Lot 169 Don Suggs Two Fridas (from Matrimony Series) (2) 2006

Don Suggs is often called “an artist’s artist.” For more than 45 years, he has been a popular fixture in the Los Angeles art scene–as a teacher at UCLA, an editor, and a prolific and exhibited artist engaged in a wide array of forms and mediums. Our upcoming October 11th auction features a striking example of Suggs’s art: Two Fridas (from Matrimony Series) (2) (2006), Lot 169, a work that consists of paired tondos–a circular canvas format that dates to the Renaissance. Los Angeles Modern Auctions recently spoke with Suggs about his artistic process.
