Andrea Zittel designed her series of fourteen A-Z Sorting Trays in response to the clutter of daily life: covering the surfaces of her own home with paper and then tracing the various objects that had been sitting on them—from phone chargers to keys, hair ties to tape measures—she used these outlines as the basis for her utilitarian organizers. Each tray is cut from Finland Birch, coming in a variety of sizes that welcome infinite uses. Zittel designed these trays in 2001, one year after founding her ongoing Joshua Tree site and ongoing work, A-Z West. As Zittel puts it, "Since its inception A-Z West has functioned as an evolving testing ground for living—a place in which spaces, objects, and acts of living all intertwine into a single ongoing investigation into what it means to exist and participate in our culture today."
