The William Burgess House

The present work arrives from the William Burgess House—also known as the Bougain Villa—in Palm Springs. Seated at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains, the home was designed by influential mid-century modern architect Hugh Kaptur for William and Clara Burgess, who commissioned Kaptur in 1957. A sprawling villa, Kaptur's design dramatically merges indoor and outdoor living with floor-to-ceiling windows, a boulder, and large stones integrated into the floor plan, and its extraordinary design was captured by photographer Julius Shulman in 1958. Decades later, in 1980s, Albert Frey undertook an extensive renovation of the residence, expanding its footprint and adding a guest house—indeed Frey built his own home, Frey House II, on the same hillside as the Burgess House.
