Danny Lyon

“The civil rights movement was my coming of age,” photographer Danny Lyon explained in a 2012 interview with The Guardian. At 20 years old in 1962, Lyon left his home in Queens, New York, to join the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in Selma, Alabama – a week later, he was in a jail cell next to Dr. Martin Luther King. Over the next several years, Lyon would continue to establish himself as a proponent of New Journalism (along with figures like Hunter S. Thompson), counting among his subjects biker gangs, inmates of the Texas prison system, and the razing of historic neighborhoods in lower Manhattan to make room for the World Trade Center.

I wanted adventure and I wanted dirt – all the things my parents didn't want. I wanted freedom for myself. I had a huge sense of adventure and I wanted to experience it.
