A beloved auteur with a cult following, artist, filmmaker, and musician David Lynch studied painting before making his first short films in the late 1960s. As a young man, Lynch enrolled at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design in Washington, D.C. and then transferred to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1964. He left after a year to travel in Europe with his friend Jack Fisk; the pair hoped to apprentice themselves to the Austrian expressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka but were not successful. Lynch made his first work incorporating moving images, Six Men Getting Sick (Six Times), in 1967. He would release Eraserhead a decade later, going on to write and direct cinematic monuments including Blue Velvet (1986) and Mulholland Drive (2001). In addition to his success as a filmmaker, Lynch has continued to create music and maintain his visual art practice, including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, and sculpture, for more than five decades.
