Commissioned by Moss and shown for the first time at our New York gallery, the Repeat Textiles series had an unusually long cycle of repetition, which allowed [us to] upholster a 36-foot long sectional seating unit which ran down the middle of the gallery in an unbroken line. In addition to the textiles, we displayed a small series of objects—the embroidered bowl being one example—which bore the same or similar patterns taken from the textiles. However, in a bold interdisciplinary embrace, Hella embroidered the patterns directly onto each porcelain object using cotton thread, ignoring functionality and merging traditional methods to arrive at new approaches, thereby defying the ancient guilds system of highly segregated disciplines. Hella stepped over the line, intelligently, intentionally, effortlessly, beautifully.
