The first of Pamela Weir-Quiton's use of the horse as a form she would return many times throughout her career, this horse pre-dates the artist's iconic rocking forms and shows the development of her use of stylized animalia.

"[I made this] ceramic slab horse in 1966 as a slab project in ceramics at Cal State Northridge. As I worked on this piece, a book fell from the shelves in the library and landed at my feet. It was a book on haniwa—Japanese tomb sculpture. I fainted, because I was unfamiliar with haniwa and there was my horse pictured in the book! It was the first time I realized I was channeling creative energy."
