A celebrated designer based in Los Angeles, Gerald McCabe was a man of many talents. He is perhaps best known as the founder of McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. Since opening in 1958, McCabe’s Guitar Shop has provided a nesting ground to folk singers and enthusiasts, gradually becoming a “hall of fame” of a sort in Los Angeles. In pursuit of furniture making, he sold the shop in the mid-1980’s. Over the years, McCabe collaborated with numerous California-based manufacturers to bring his unique vision to life. He remarked, “I think my furniture has a lasting quality…When you come into a room, it doesn’t hit you over the head, it doesn’t fall into a category, it’s an entity by itself and it is still appealing years later.” His widely ranging styles of furniture—warm wood and leather to cold glass and steel—indeed defy categorization, but they share a common denominator: high level of craftsmanship and practicality. In addition to his passion for furniture making and folk music, he enjoyed restoring tugboats, driving race cars and teaching yoga.
