Beginning in the mid-1960s, John McCracken would become known for his works that idiosyncratically blended Minimalism with elements of the California-born Finish Fetish and Light and Space movements. While McCracken would adopt components of these cultural currents—the use of industrial materials, for example, or a fixation with basic geometric forms—he also deviated to follow his own path. As Linda Norden wrote for Artforum "If [McCracken's] perspective was more Los Angeles than New York, it was also more McCracken than LA." Unlike his contemporaries Peter Alexander or De Wain Valentine, who both worked extensively in resin, the sculptural objects that McCracken created were oriented to reflect light, meticulously crafted and highly saturated in bright monochromes. “My works," McCracken has said, “are minimal and reductive, but also maximal. I try to make them concise, clear statements in three-dimensional form, and also to take them to a breathtaking level of beauty.”
