The Comic Underground

Palanca’s Early Work

Known for his uniquely styled homoerotic art, Peruvian artist Pedro Santillana adopted the moniker Palanca (which means “lever” or “gear shift” in Spanish) by his mid-20s. Early in his career, Palanca promoted himself and his work with underground comic books like the present lot, which showcases his predilection for fetishizing men’s bare feet. In 2001, Palanca moved to Los Angeles and made connections with the Tom of Finland Foundation, which would come to champion his work and, in 2007, presented him with the Tom’s Award.
