Produced by Ed Sullivan and airing on May 21, 1970, The 5th Dimension Special: An Odyssey in the Cosmic Universe of Peter Max combined the era-defining art of Peter Max with pop music for a zany musical extravaganza. Max, whose colorful, tripped out aesthetic captured the psychedelic exuberance of the 1960s, first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1967, drawing live on-set for the show's audience of millions. The 5th Dimension Special allowed Max to expand his set work into the realm of design, applying his vision to props, backdrops, and costumes. The present work arrives from the Estate of Bill Bohnert, who worked as a set designer for The Ed Sullivan Show and collaborated with Max to make the artist's technicolor universe into a reality.
