Near San Simeon, site of the famed Hearst Castle, on a hillcrest overlooking the Pacific Ocean, a pair of collectors restored a neglected mid-century jewel, breathing life into their new home with a captivating blend of timeless design. Amidst sweeping ocean views and sublime sunsets, a wealth of George Nakashima’s quietly elegant studio furnishings mingle with works from Isamu Noguchi and T.J. Robsjohn-Gibbings, among others. Lighting designs with names like “Miracle” and “Magic Forest” offer illumination, while works from preeminent American designers Frank Lloyd Wright and Karl Springer help keep things grounded, as do earthy ceramics by Stan Bitters. As testament to the significance of this residence and its interior, Julius Shulman documented the home in a series of full-color photographs, capturing it in all its California glory: elegant, organic, and at least a little bit magical.
