Lloyd Hamrol’s Uptown Rocker (1986)

The present lot was created in preparation for Lloyd Hamrol’s monumental Uptown Rocker, a 35-foot tall public sculpture at the traffic island of downtown Los Angeles’s 4th Street and upper Grand Avenue. Installed in 1986, the sculpture was commissioned by the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency as part of its Bunker Hill Redevelopment Project. “It’s the playful treatment of an exasperating, everyday subject,” Hamrol said of his work. “The arc and the cars playing in the arc can be seen as a portion of an endless loop. If you close this up there’s no hope, but I left it open, so it’s optimistic.”
