A major figure of geometric abstraction and abstract illusionism, Ronald Davis was an early progenitor of shaped canvas painting. The present work, painted circa 1965—shortly after he completed his studies at the San Francisco Art Institute, and around the time he relocated to Los Angeles—is representative of Davis’s initial experimentation with using an unconventional picture plane. He was quickly met with critical acclaim, not least by critic Michael Fried who declared in Artforum, “Ron Davis is a young California artist whose new paintings...are among the most significant produced anywhere during the past few years, and place him, along with Stella and Bannard, at the forefront of his generation.”
