The present lot was featured in John Chamberlain's 1969 solo exhibition at Mizuno Gallery, led by Riko Mizuno, who is celebrated for her enormous influence on shaping the post-war art scene in Los Angeles and beyond. This sculpture was one of seven similar works in the show; Peter Plagens described the group for Artforum as “seven crumpled paper-bag sculptures, some unadulterated, others with black cardboard or black-backed leadfoil additions, liberally splashed and soaked with polyester resin...and displayed, with only one exception, on five-foot-high plexiglass [sic] pedestals.” In Plagens’s analysis, “The sense of of pure play is also the sense of an artist at work, insistent on the integrity of his materials. It's a good minor show by a major artist who might also be playing around with the idea of ‘surfacing.’”
