Swiss photographer and designer Herbert Matter and his wife, American painter and art critic Mercedes Matter (née Carles), moved from New York City to Los Angeles in 1943, where they joined the studio of their friends Charles and Ray Eames. The Matters also worked on the Eameses' influential design journal, California Arts and Architecture, which was run by John Entenza. In 1945, Entenza initiated the groundbreaking Eames Case Study House program through the journal, for which Herbert Matter produced the cover. While the Matters would ultimately move back to New York in 1946, their three years in Los Angeles proved fruitful for all involved. In addition to designing journal covers, Herbert Matter also took photographs documenting the operations of the Eames studio.
