A major figure in establishing organic-modern design, California ceramicist and sculptor Stan Bitters has been working in clay for six decades. He studied with Peter Voulkos at Otis College of Art and Design, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in painting from the University of California Los Angeles in 1957. Immediately after graduating, he joined the Madera, California, adobe manufacturer Hans Sumpf, where he was granted complete creative freedom to design and create tiles, architectural installations, planters, and the hanging birdhouses that he is especially well-known for. Bitters is the subject of the 2015 documentary short Modern Primitive, and his works were featured in the celebrated California Design series as well as the Craft Contemporary's exhibition for Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945–1980s, Golden State of Craft: California 1960–1985.
