The chair is the hardest to design. It is ultimately a self portrait of who you are; what you would look like as a chair.

Maya Lin, as a Chair

Acclaimed artist and architect Maya Lin made her first foray into production furniture design with her Earth is (not) Flat series for Knoll International. The line was commissioned by Knoll in 1998 to celebrate the company's 60th anniversary, and Lin drew her inspiration from the New Zealand landscape where she had recently honeymooned. Lin equated the contours of her chaise design to the horizon line and her own contemplations and study of the earth's curvature.
