The Paris-born artist is also known for his book illustrations, including the novel Flight to Arras by his friend and author, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Prior to book illustrations, Lamotte trained at the École des Beaux-Arts at Sorbonne before leaving for New York in 1935.
