A successful book illustrator, the artist was commissioned in 1933 by the White House to paint the first ladies' gowns. These paintings were published in a book by Arnold Constable, founder of the Arnold Constable & Company department stores. Barton later went on to teach at the Chouinard Art Institute from 1941-47.
