MORE INFORMATION:

Wayne Thiebaud stated in 2007 that he painted this piece in New York while sitting on a window ledge looking down at Madison Avenue from a ‘design shop’ where he worked at a time (1956). While Madison Avenue, NY pre-dates Thiebaud's similarly vertiginous aerial views of San Francisco streets of later years, the connection is evident. Here the choice of vantage points and the use of strong vectoring in the composition result in a sense of expansive visual volume. Though in the latter urban aerials, the kinetic momentum of Madison Avenue, NY gives way to a studied interplay of structures, this dominant sense of visual volume reemerges and sustains.

Conveyed via Paul Thiebaud Gallery, San Francisco, February 2007.
