The June 7, 2009 Modern Art & Design Auction featured 588 lots of exceptional fine art and design ranging from low, reasonably estimated items to highly prized rarities. Special attention was given to pieces that “anyone could afford,” opening the door for young collectors to get started. The sale totaled $1,252,452 (including buyer’s premium), selling just under 60% of the 588 lots available.
LAMA showcased outstanding lots of paintings, prints, sculpture, furniture, and other decorative objects from 1920 to the present. This auction presented an extraordinary collection of work from the world’s most renowned modern artists and architects such as Diego Giacometti, Claire Falkenstein, and Jeff Koons, in addition to Italian designs by Gaetano Pesce, Gio Ponti, and Piero Fornasetti. Fine art offerings included works by Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Richard Diebenkorn, and Roy Lichtenstein.
Fine art highlights included the Elaine de Kooning oil on canvas, Bullfight (Lot 138 est. $80,000 - 100,000, realized $54,000) and a Roy Lichtenstein screenprint,Composition (Lot 487 est. $30,000 - 40,000, realized $39,600). Design flourished at the sale, with highlights that included a pair of Giacometti chandeliers (Lots 282 and 283 est. $80,000 - 120,000 each) that realized a total of $204,000, a set of eight Walter Lamb dining chairs (Lot 423 est. $7,000 - 9,000, realized $15,600), and a rare George Nelson tray table (Lot 149 est. $600 - 900, realized $3,840).
