Lot 60: Rudolph M. Schindler

Armchair

Executed c. 1948
Custom designed for the Janson House
Sold with a photograph of Ms. Janson sitting in the chair c. 1960.
These three Schindler chairs were custom built for the Ellen Janson Residence, Los Angeles. Janson and Schindler had a close friendship dating back to the late 1920s. Eventually he built her house in 1948-1949, towards the end of his career. The lounge chair is similar to a pair of chairs Schindler designed for his own residence (the Kings Road House) in 1921. It is believed that Schindler only designed these chairs for Kings Road and for Ms. Janson.
