MODERN ART & DESIGN AUCTION
October 14, 2007

The October 14, 2007 California Modern Art & Design auction was a special auction dedicated to works connected to California artists, architects, and designers. In keeping with their established tradition of offering fantastic 20th century design and fine art items, Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) dedicated an entire auction centered on works that were designed or produced here in California.

This auction showcased some of the best works from 20th century California artists, from fine art to ceramics and furniture. Ceramic and pottery lots included pieces by Laura Andreson, Gertrud & Otto Natzler, John Mason, Peter Voulkos, Barbara Willis, Beatrice Wood, as well as select Architectural Pottery. Fine artists included Judy Chicago, Richard Diebenkorn, Ellsworth Kelly, David Hockney, Richard Pettibone, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, and Ed Kienholz. Iconic furniture designs were also offered from the following artists: Charles & Ray Eames, Frank Gehry, Greta Grossman, John Lautner, Alvin Lustig, Sam Maloof, Richard Neutra, and RM Schindler. And for the first time in LAMA's history, there featured a section on works by Otis College of Art & Design students and teachers from 1950-1970.

Multiple lots realized impressive prices, such as the cover lot, Judy Chicago's painted car hood (Lot 79 est. $150,000 - 200,000, realized $288,000) and the Richard Diebenkorn color etching and aquatint, High Green, Version I (Lot 176 est. $120,000 - 150,000, realized $156,000). A dining table and eight chairs by Sam Maloof (Lot 142 est. $100,000 - 150,000) brought in $144,000. LAMA was fortunate to offer a rare mobile hand strung with sea shells by Otto Natzler (Lot 56 est. $8,000 - 10,000) that realized $49,200. Other highlights include a LACMA-exhibited collage by Esteban Vicente entitled Comstock (Lot 364 est. $10,000 - 15,000, realized $31,200) and Richard Pettibone's Frank Stella Slieve More 1964 (Lot 328 est. $18,000 - 25,000, realized $30,000).
