Over 900 bidders competed for 396 lots of Modern Art & Design, proving that the art market is as strong as the stock market in 2017. Rare works by Alma Thomas, Chris Burden, Keith Haring, Georges Jouve, Pablo Picasso, and Peter Alexander all far surpassed auction estimates with many achieving world auction records for the artists.

Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA), the premier auction house for modern art and design on the West Coast, has announced the date of its Winter auction, which will take place on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at 12pm (PT). The curated LAMA auction will represent many of the most coveted examples of contemporary artwork in today’s market to include rare paintings by Sam Francis, Ed Ruscha and Alma Thomas, sculptural works by Jenny Holzer and Harry Bertoia as well as prints, multiples and works on paper by Keith Haring, Richard Diebenkorn and Roy Lichtenstein. LOS ANGELES, CA – Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) answered questions regarding the health of the art market on Sunday with strong results from its October 9, 2016 Modern Art & Design Auction. The top lot in the auction was an iconic painting by Ed Ruscha—Crescent Heights Becomes Laurel Canyon (2000), estimated at $150,000-200,000—which soared three times over estimate to $468,750. LAMA set a new world auction record for Bay Area artist Jay DeFeo, selling her 1982 painting Apex for $281,250, and a rare 1955 painting by Southern California Hard Edge master John McLaughlin realized $250,000. LAMA’s total auction sales for the Modern Art & Design Auction realized $4.6 million, selling 113% of the 431 lots by value.

The curated auction will represent some of the most coveted examples of abstract artwork, including Helen Frankenthaler’s intimate 1976 acrylic painting, Jade, and Ad Reinhardt’s Abstract Painting, a significant 1958 work from the artist’s pivotal black series. In addition, Crescent Heights Becomes Laurel Canyon (2000), an acrylic on raw linen, and Eight Trembling Individuals (1977), a blackberry juice on paper, both by Ed Ruscha will hit the block, marking a milestone for the auction house.

LAMA set world record prices for Sheila Hicks, a work on paper by Ken Price, and a painting by Jules Olitski from his late period, proving that geography is not a limitation for this boutique auction house, which continues to secure first-rate consignments. The top lot of the auction, a rare Isamu Noguchi Chess Table rose to $137,500, spurred by competitive floor and phone bidding. LAMA’s total auction sales for the Modern Art & Design Auction realized $2 million, selling 112% of the 326 lots by value.
