Van Nuys – Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) May 23, 2010 Modern Art & Design Auction totaled $1.67 million (including buyer’s premium) selling 64% of the 451 lots available.

Over 300 people attended the auction, making it the largest attendance at a LAMA auction to date. The gallery was standing room only and was filled with buyers from all over the world. Buyers represented France, Portugal, Israel, Mexico, and a heavy percentage from California.

LAMA offered five lots of screenprints by Andy Warhol, all of which found buyers with a total realizing $216,518.75. Four pieces that stood out as surprises were the Francois-Xavier Lalanne Monkeys, doubling the low estimate of $100,000, realizing $199,062.50. Three other interesting lots that far exceeded their expectations were the Pipsan Saarinen Swanson Group of Outdoor Furniture realizing $14,700 (est. $3,000 – 5,000), Anna Katherine Skeele War Dance realizing $13,475 (est. $3,000 – 5,000), and Charles & Ray Eames “Hang-it-all” realizing $8,575 (est. $2,000 – 3,000).

Top lots include:

  • Lot 79, Francois-Xavier Lalanne, Singes Attentifs SI & SII, $199,062.50 (est. $100,000 – 125,000)
  • Lot 360, Andy Warhol, Electric Chairs (Suite of 10), $147,000 (est. $150,000 – 200,000)
  • Lot 272, Phillip Lloyd Powell, Bar Cabinet, $61,250 (est. $70,000 – 90,000)
  • Lot 251, Ralph Goings, Gem Top, $42,875 (est. $30,000 – 50,000)
  • Lot 78, Francois-Xavier Lalanne , Rhinoceros Bleu, $30,625 (est. $25,000 – 35,000)
  • Lot 328, Chuck Close, Lyle, $29,400 (est. $25,000 – 30,000)
  • Lot 42, John McLaughlin, Untitled(#33), $27,563 (est. $20,000 – 30,000)
