For Immediate Release

LOS ANGELES, CA – An important Santa Barbara-based collection of major modern and contemporary fine art and sculpture, including over 30 major California artists, will be up for auction May 6th at Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA). The collection, which includes early works from George Rickey and Karl Benjamin, consists of over 100 pieces and represents the most comprehensive offering of California art ever to be offered at LAMA.

When asked about the significance of the collection, Peter Loughrey said,

“This collection represents a survey of several generations of California artists staring with early works by Rickey, Benjamin, and Frey, to Hawkinson and Therrien who are actively working today. This will be the first major group of California art to come onto the market since the Pacific Standard Time shows, which has recently given artists and designers from this celebrated period much deserved attention. Pacific Standard Time has brought interest levels up and has convinced sellers to let go of major pieces that have been in private collections for decades. It has certainly brought material to the market, now it’s a matter of how the market will support the material.

Highlights in the collection include George Rickey’s first ever commissioned sculpture, commissioned for this collection in 1962. This work, which has never traded hands until now, comes with letters and correspondence explaining the process. Additionally, a selection of 10 paintings from Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson, and Fredrick Hammersley create a mini-survey of the Hard-Edge school, presenting an unprecedented opportunity to acquire these very desirable pieces.”

In addition to major California artists such as Edward Kienholz, DeWain Valentine, and David Hockney the auction will feature other modern and contemporary artists such as Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Louise Bourgeois. Design highlights include works by Richard Neutra, R.M. Schindler, Greta Grossman, and Gertrud & Otto Natzler.

Advance preview begins April 25th and the auction starts at noon on May 6th.

The auction will be hosted by Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA), the fastest growing auction house in the modern and contemporary art world. Visit www.LAMODERN.com or call 323-904-1950 for additional details.
