Calder’s Final Flourish: A Late Life Masterpiece Goes to Auction in Los Angeles

April 16, 2015

For Immediate Release

April 10, 2015

LOS ANGELES, CA – Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) is pleased to announce that an impressive Alexander Calder (1898–1976) standing mobile from 1976, Quatre Blancs, will go to auction on May 17, 2015. Estimated at $500,000–700,000, this outstanding work will be offered at auction for the first time since the original owner purchased it in 1978 through Galerie Maeght, Paris, and will be sold with a copy of the original purchase receipt. This piece is among Calder’s very last works and was made for his Galerie Maeght show in December 1976, which opened shortly after his death. The prestigious Parisian gallery, a beloved mecca for the postwar avant-garde and artistic cognoscenti, nurtured the careers of other 20th-century masters as well, including Marc Chagall, Marcel Duchamp, and Joan Miró.

To go to auction on May 17, 2015 at Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA)

Quatre Blancs is a prime example of Calder’s artistic genius. “The substantial size, the simple construction, the elegant balance, and the primary colors – Quatre Blancs shows Calder’s masterful ability to distill his life’s work into a simple gesture,” states Peter Loughrey, Director of Fine Art & Design at LAMA.

Calder’s long-standing relationship with Galerie Maeght was significant in establishing the artist’s international reach: with the gallery his work traveled from Paris, across America, to California. Major exhibitions of Calder’s sculptures will open at Pulitzer Arts Foundation, St. Louis, Missouri, in May 2015; and at Tate Modern, London, in November 2015.
