October 10, 1992
The October 10, 1992 20th Century Decorative Arts Auction was LAMA’s first auction. Held at Peter Loughrey’s first gallery at 332 1/2 La Brea Avenue in West Hollywood, this 150-lot sale featured iconic designs from Mid-Centry Modern masters.
Highlights included a Frank Gehry “Grandpa Beaver” chair (Lot 131 est. $7,000 – 9,000) and an Eero Saarinen Womb chair and ottoman (Lot 42 est. $1,700 – 1,900). LAMA also offered one of its first rare and important pieces, a desk designed by and executed for Richard Neutra circa 1950 for his office in Silverlake (Lot 81 est. $8,000 – 10,000). The desk is comprised of a broad plywood top cantilevered over a cabinet with two drawers, a door, and bookshelf on the reverse. Its simple structural support resembles Neurta’s post and beam construction of this period.
