The May 16, 1999 20th Century Decorative Arts Auction featured over 540 lots of modern design, furniture, sculpture, ceramics, and art. In addition to classic designs from Mid-Century Modern greats, LAMA offered a very rare Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen “Conversation” armchair prototype (Lot 187), which was constructed out of molded plywood with form foam rubber cushioning and custom upholstery by Marli Ehrman. Estimated at $45,000 – 50,000, this impressive chair realized an astounding $129,000.

Additionally, a rare Sam Maloof rocking chair (Lot 95 est. $14,000 – 16,000) realized $23,000 and a Charles and Ray Eames “ESU 420-C” shelving unit (Lot 197 est. $9,000 – 10,000) realized $21,850. An R.M. Schindler “Unit” chair and sofa from the Van Patten Residence (Lots 301 and 302 est. $12,000 – 15,000 and $16,000 – 18,000) realized a total of $39,100.
