Dave Muller

June 7, 2018

One of the key Los Angeles artists to emerge in the 1990s, Dave Muller established his reputation by independently and anonymously posting hand-painted watercolors publicizing local gallery exhibitions of artists he admired. The designs for these commemorative works were both tributes and sly commentaries, often adding art historical contexts and elaborations to the art being espoused. Muller also frequently staged art events in the spirit of 1960s “Happenings” known as “Three Day Weekends,” featuring impromptu exhibitions, art-making, and music.

These three works on paper, What Goes On (Sam Durant) (1995), I Keep Waiting for Hendrix to Break Into the Star-Spangled Banner (1994), and I Couldn’t Find a Single Pedestal Chair at the Kunstlerhaus Bethanien (1996) are beautifully executed celebrations of a favored artist (Durant), musician (Hendrix), and designer (Eero Saarinen), evidencing Muller’s own commitment to these three fields of endeavor.
